New women’s refuge opens its door to first guests

Nano’s House welcomed its first guests, providing a new home in Sydney's inner city for women and children seeking short-term support while getting back on their feet. These guests were initially met at our overnight shelter at St Francis House in Redfern, where they found temporary refuge. They were homeless, and without community. We're delighted to offer them a few months' stay at Nano’s House, ensuring their needs are met while more permanent housing solutions are arranged.

The name 'Nano’s House' was suggested by our own Sr. Anne Jordan PBVM, a Presentation sister who played an instrumental role in the formation of Cana. Sr. Anne resided in this house for many years while leading Cana and supporting its community members. Reflecting the compassionate legacy of Nano Nagle, it was Sr. Anne's suggestion that this place—a safe refuge for women and children in need—be named ‘Nano’s House’.

Over the past few months, Nano’s House has been prepared with immense support from our community. Special thanks to Steph Scali from Nick Scali for furnishing the living room, Mike and Lucy from Forty Winks Crows Nest for providing beds and bedding, and Bunnings in Alexandria for their invaluable assistance. Gratitude also extends to volunteers who contributed their time and efforts. We'd also like to acknowledge Barrie, the owner of Nano’s House, for his continued support and providing us with use of this property for a subsidised price.
