Beyond just a place to stay: The effects of homelessness

Earlier this month, we reflected on National Homelessness Week 2024, a time to raise awareness and advocate for change. For many in our community, homelessness isn’t just a statistic—it’s a reality. With over 122,000 Australians experiencing homelessness on any given night, the reasons are complex and varied -from family violence, trauma, untreated mental health issues, and job loss. The journey to homelessness is often about much more than just lacking a place to sleep.

The stress from rising interest rates, job loss, and domestic violence has taken a significant toll on many lives, leading to feelings of being overwhelmed and isolated. We’ve seen firsthand how these challenges go beyond having a roof over one’s head; it’s about the emotional and mental impacts associated with homelessness.

Our mission extends beyond providing shelter. We focus on creating a safe and supportive environment where healing and growth can happen. By addressing the root causes of homelessness, we help prevent individuals from reaching a breaking point. We don’t just offer a place to stay; we provide a community where people can rebuild trust, rediscover their value, and look forward to a positive future.

Inclusion and connection are crucial in making people feel less isolated and more hopeful. Through shared meals, reflection sessions, community outings, and our social hub, we foster environments where healing and growth can begin. It’s about building a more inclusive and positive community where everyone can learn together and rebuild trust in others.

Many years ago, I struggled to understand why people living on Centrelink with very little disposable income would spend it on what we might consider ‘unnecessary’ items. Then one gentleman shared with me that, “There is no point in saving or planning for a future because I have nowhere stable to live, no one who cares, and so I live from day to day.” Now, he has permanent housing, a job, and has started saving.

Addressing homelessness is a collective effort, and creating lasting change requires community involvement. By focusing on more than just providing shelter, we aim to foster hope, connection, and new beginnings for those affected. Every contribution helps build a more inclusive and supportive environment, making a significant impact on the lives of those in need.
