Holding on to hope: A story of courage
In December last year, we met a young woman who stayed a few nights at St Francis House. This provided us the opportunity to get to know her and understand her situation. She had been living on the streets, and in and out of temporary shelters, for some eight months, having earlier suffered significant trauma and abuse which led to a serious drug addiction. Tragically, her very young daughter had been removed from her care.
This young woman was determined to change her life—and that of her daughter. Without assistance, during this eight-month period, she was able to get herself clean while living rough. Nevertheless, the prospects of her being reunited with her daughter were poor, as she had no secure housing and no reliable support network.
We were able to offer her a room at our Nagle House—a safe house for women offering transitional accommodation and wrap-around supports. She has now been with us for four months. During this time, we initiated contact with DCJ and began the process of building a relationship with them, so they were confident she had ongoing support. Still, she needed stable housing. Waiting for appropriate social housing can take so long!
Fortunately, our Nano’s House in Darlington—which we rent from one of our supporters on a subsidised basis—was freeing up and would be perfect for mum and baby daughter.
DCJ, its lawyers, and the Family Court all agreed. We are so excited, as we can now continue to provide wrap-around support and love to both of them. To be able to respond so quickly and provide safety, security and such life-changing support in such a vulnerable situation is the true essence of our mission.
Every donation helps us offer a safe place, wrap-around support, and the opportunity for a fresh start.
